Centric Together is not only our response to the national conversation about diversity and inclusion, but also our imperative.
As a company that prides itself in creating a great environment for our employees and values self-reflection, transparency and vulnerability, the national conversation about race, equity and inclusivity was a wake-up call.
We started to grapple with who we are versus who we want to be – as a company, as a partner to our clients, as an employer. We started questioning how diverse we are as an organization, and the answer was: not nearly enough.
We started to question how inclusive we are as a company, how much our dedication to providing unmatched experiences to our clients and employees is actually felt – every day, by every team member, by every client. The answer was: we’re doing pretty well, but there’s always room for more. Always.
So, a few months ago, a group of employees created Centric Together, an initiative aimed at deliberately and boldly becoming more diverse and more inclusive. Within weeks, what started as a few people quickly grew to more than 100, backed fully by our company’s leadership. Now, Centric Together is our top company-wide initiative in 2021.
Through Centric Together, we are strengthening the fabric of our culture. We’re intentionally creating space to:
- Celebrate our differences by encouraging conversations on tough topics. We want to see and hear from everyone, not just the majority.
- Challenge our notions of inclusivity. We say that Centric is like family, Centric is like home. We must realize that “home” and “family” mean very different things to different people. Everyone should feel that that at Centric, regardless of what you look like or who you love, you are accepted as yourself.
- Connect with our communities meaningfully. We want to turn our passions, resources, and abilities toward supporting and bettering our local communities.
- Examine why we aren’t more diverse, and aggressively improve our current practices spanning recruiting to retention. Recruits must see themselves reflected and represented in our company, across all levels.
So, we begin our journey. We have struggled with how to hold ourselves accountable and how to talk about our progress publicly – particularly when our plans don’t go according to plan. We decided the best, most authentic way to do this is to be transparent and open about where we are on our journey, where we want to go, and how we will get there.
But most of all, we need to listen and learn from those who have come before us. We have big ideas and big dreams. Despite our best intentions, this journey isn’t going to be quick or easy. We need to learn from others.
