Florida International University is offering Centric Consulting’s Miami team the opportunity to speak at a day-long presentation on an introduction to project management.
Kim Caruthers, our Miami Practice Lead, will walk attendees through a full course providing participants with an overview of project management concepts, and walking them through the project management processes, from initiation through closure.
This program is designed for professionals interested in enhancing their understanding of various processes, including general and functional managers and executives, program and project managers, project leaders and other individuals who have an interest in expanding their knowledge.
The course is in alignment with the practice as described by the Project Management Institute (PMI) in A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide). Upon completion, participants will have an understanding of the critical project management processes. They will be familiar with the process management groups and knowledge areas, and how various tools and techniques are applied to the project management processes.

Introduction and Foundation
Participants gain an understanding of key concepts in the field of project management such as the role of the project manager and other stakeholders. This section describes the core project management process groups and the project life cycle. Participants discover how different organization structures influence the effectiveness of project management.
Project Initiation Processes
Participants learn the importance of properly authorizing a project, identifying stakeholders, and ensuring the goals of the project are in alignment with the requesting organization or department.
Project Planning Processes
This section covers what is required to ensure that stakeholders are engaged and that the project plan will deliver outcomes as expected. Participants learn the importance of documentation and the dependencies between schedule, cost, quality, and risk. Different types of estimating methods are explored. The basics of communications and procurement processes are covered.
Project Executing Processes
Participants learn the importance of measuring progress against approved project plans, developing project teams and meeting stakeholder expectations. Students explore techniques to help motivate, equip, and keep project team members accountable and engaged. They also learn some tools and techniques to improve team performance and options for managing conflict and change.
Project Control Processes
This section addresses the importance of measuring project plan variance and change control. One of the primary roles of a project manager is to ensure the project is on track and changes are managed in a controlled and approved manner.
Project Closing Processes
Participants learn the importance of formal project closure and the processes required to reflect project outcomes accurately, to communicate results to stakeholders, to ensure knowledge sharing and to archive project artifacts.

Kim Caruthers, PMP, has over 20 years of experience in project management across multiple industries including healthcare, transportation, education, manufacturing, telecommunications, and technology. Kim has taught project management for over seventeen years as an Adjunct Professor and Consulting Lecturer for educational institutions including Florida International University and Nova Southeastern University.
She is certified to teach “Leadership for Strategic Execution,” a Stanford Advanced Project Management program (SAPM) course.
Kim has taught for organizations such as Google, IBM, Visa, Cisco, the School Board of Broward County, Miami-Dade County, Broward County, Memorial Health System, Heico, Sentry Data, Perry Ellis, Univision, Spirit Airlines, and CSX Transportation.
