As demand for data scientists explodes, professionals will grow their own data science skills, eschewing long-term professional programs and advanced degrees in favor of learning immediately applicable skills.

Alas, it’s not clear to us that the supply of self-taught experts are showing up at the door, so we’re going to have to score this one “2014 not so much, but 2015 has potential.”
Seems like big data may have lost a little bit of buzz. Or, are we all just tired of hearing about the topic, and as a result the headlines have become less eye catching?
Nevertheless, the following still holds true in the marketplace:
- Chronic shortages still exist
- More and more colleges are announcing degree programs (New York University, Columbia, Ohio State, etc.).
- More online or open source data scientist learning tools are popping up
- Companies are getting creative solving shortage problem by utilizing teams
